If you’re trying to sell your home, sometimes it can be an overwhelming project to prepare your home.  And it can be hard to see the forest for the trees when it comes to your own house.  How your home appears to potential buyers can really make a big difference in whether or not it sells.  Today we’re going to talk about a few things you can do to make your home more appealing to the buyers out there.


When it comes to staging a home, I think of it as the opposite of decorating a home.  When you are decorating your home, you are adding your personality to it and when you are staging a home to sell, you are taking your personality out.  That way, the potential buyers can easily imagine their belongings in the space.

  1. Reduce the clutter – this can be everything from piles on the counter top to pairing back the photos on the mantle and downsizing the numbers of things hanging on the walls.

  2. Do the repairs – even though you won’t be around to enjoy them, replace the damaged flooring, fix the broken window, all those jobs that have been on your list – do them up, it makes the home more appealing.

  3. Tone down the crazy – even though you love your collection of taxidermy squirrels and the bright orange accent wall, buyers have a hard time seeing past things like that.  Tucking some things away ahead of time can be to your advantage in the long run, as can doing a little painting.

  4. Scale back the furniture – we tend to overfill a space with furniture so take out the unneeded chairs and tables or bookcases to open up a room.  When there is less big stuff in a room, it feels larger and larger rooms appeal to buyers.

  5. Get rid of pet smells – nothing is worse than the smell of cat litter or wet dog when viewing a home, so be sure your home smells fresh and clean.

  6. Ramp up the curb appeal – take some time to be sure the yard, especially the front yard, is looking spiffy.  Put away kids toys, get rid of dead plants, mow the lawn and freshen up any paint that needs it.


These are just a few to the tips that come to mind right away for staging your home.  There are loads more out there, no doubt.  But anything you can do to help your potential buyer envision themselves living in the home, it will help sell faster which means you can move on sooner, too!
