Quick and Gourd-geous Pumpkin Centrepieces

Fall décor is out in full force, and this week I’m going to show you how to prepare your own pumpkin centre piece in minutes to bring some fall décor into your home and add that extra piece as you welcome guests to your table for Thanksgiving.

Did you know you can carve a faux pumpkin just like a regular pumpkin! This is one of my favourite fall crafts that I’ve used year after year.

It’s simple: carefully using a sharp knife, cut the top of the pumpkin off as you would with a regular pumpkin. You can save the top to set beside the piece, or toss it. Best part? Zero mess! Each year I store it in the basement, and once the leaves start turning, it’s a really quick way to swap in some fall décor, with little effort. There are several colour varieties for the faux pumpkin, with traditional orange pumpkins, white, or even blue.

Now, filling the pumpkin. I’ve got a few options for you:

Not feeling super creative?
Never fear! Michaels has beautiful coordinated and fully prepared bouquets of faux flowers and other fillers. You may be thinking: Faux flowers? No thanks! But faux flowers have really come a long way, and there are lots of colour and varieties that not only look real, but have a nice, modern feel. You can even grab one of the prepared bouquets, and then add some fillers of your choosing if creativity strikes.

Head outside!
Who doesn’t love a nice walk in the fall? Bring the kids or grandkids along and ask them to help you collect sticks, leaves or other goodies you find in nature. For mine this year, I chose some apple branches, some Nova Scotia Heather, and added a faux flower. It took minutes to make! The pumpkin on the side is something I added for fun, using my Silhouette machine and creating a vinyl sticker for the lettering. Stickers are also a neat add on if you see some in the scrapbook section, or want to add words!

Get traditional
You can’t go wrong with beautiful fall colours like oranges, reds and yellows. Adding pieces like acorns, pinecones, and leaves is an easy touch. Even a simple twig or two with the tops sprayed with metallic spray paint can add to a traditional colour theme.

Have fun with colour
Sometimes it’s fun to go a bit non-traditional and add some coordinating colours that match your colour scheme, but still bring that seasonal look to your home. Grab some spray paint, some Dollar store gourds, acorns or pinecones and give them a spray! Think: blues, greys, pinks and turquoise.

Go real!
If you have an event and want to wow your guests, you can also use a real pumpkin as a vase or even as a planter. Fall mums are in abundance and do well to be planted right inside the pumpkin! You can also use the pumpkin as a centerpiece, by cleaning out the pumpkin, and placing an appropriately-sized vase right inside - just remember to change out the water. Sunflowers and fall mixes look really beautiful, and are easy to grab on your way home from work or while you’re out doing errands. Guests will wonder when Martha Stewart dropped by!

Tips for arrangements: It’s nice to create some height with your piece, like a large stem or tall sticks, and then add pieces in. Play around with it until you’re happy with it – there’s no right or wrong! Also be conscious of the backside of your piece, if it’s against a wall, then no worries, but if it’s in the middle, ensure that your project looks great from all angles.
